What is a sworn Russian translation?

A sworn Russian translation is an official translation between Dutch and Russian made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

Sworn Russian translations — where and why they are used

Russian is the official language of the Russian Federation and is widely used across former Soviet states (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan), where it serves as a second official or working language alongside the national one. For applicants in the Netherlands the demand is mainly about legal documents in property, inheritance and family matters, and — since 2022 — migration documents for Russian nationals entering the Netherlands through humanitarian procedures.

Russian uses the Cyrillic script, which means the translation has to be correct typographically as well as linguistically — a wrongly transcribed name almost always leads to rejection by the IND or a municipality. We transcribe names by a recognised standard and follow the guidance of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for diplomatic documents.

The Russian Federation has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1992, but there have been practical complications since 2022: Dutch district courts still issue apostilles for use in Russia, yet many Russian authorities respond slowly or ask for additional consular legalisation. For sworn Russian translations bound for Russian bodies, we recommend confirming the current acceptance route with the receiving authority before you order.

Common use cases

  • Russian residence registration (much reduced since 2022)
  • Russian notary — sale of property in Moscow or St Petersburg
  • Kazakh migration service — work permit for expats employed in the Netherlands
  • Rosreestr — Dutch inheritance procedure for Russian real estate
  • IND — translation of Russian originals for humanitarian procedures

Frequently asked questions: Russian translation

What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is made by a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). It carries the translator's signed statement and official stamp, which is why Dutch authorities accept it as an official translation.
Is a sworn translator the same as a certified translator?
In the Netherlands the official term is sworn (beëdigd) translator, registered in the Rbtv. Certified translation is the English label international clients use for the same thing, so for Dutch use they amount to the same document; what matters is the Rbtv registration.
Who can make a certified Dutch–Russian translation?
Only a translator sworn before a Dutch court and listed in the Rbtv, kept by Bureau Wbtv, for that language pair. We work with Rbtv-registered translators, so the translation meets the requirement of the authority that asked for it.
How much does a sworn translation cost in the Netherlands?
From €60 for a Dutch ↔ Modern Greek page and €60 for other languages, €75 per following page. The base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and the acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299, Netherlands only) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional.
Do I need a sworn translation for the IND?
The IND requires foreign-language documents in a residence or naturalisation application to be translated by a sworn (Rbtv) translator into Dutch, English, French or German. A sworn translation meets that requirement, backed by our acceptance guarantee.
Do I also need an apostille?
For use abroad your document, and sometimes the translation, may need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention; Netherlands Worldwide explains when. The order depends on the receiving authority. We can add the apostille for €99 per document.
